DEBATE – Women’s engagement around the climate emergency: From the first to be impacted to their crucial role in the political decision

25 October 2022 - 18:30 - 21:30

A few weeks before COP27 and in response to the UN Women’s 2022 theme: “Equality today for a sustainable future”, the French Development Agency and the French Institute are joining forces to organise a discussion on how to take gender into account in the climate actions in general and in the COP negotiations.

Globally, climate change and its consequences impact differently men and women: Women are more likely to be vulnerable because they work in sectors that are more affected by climate change, faces more inequalities in resources and labour market and division. According to UN, studies found that women are 14 times more likely to die in a climate catastrophe than men.

Despite recent progress, gaps remain in how to ensure systemic and effective gender mainstreaming in climate policy. For example, what are the most effective gender sensitive interventions that can contribute to achieve the Paris Agreement targets? In addition, what are the policy priorities in terms of gender and climate actions and how COP can deal with it? To sum it up, what is the real consideration of gender by and within the COP?

The purpose of the discussion is then to balance women’s vulnerabilities to climate change with their crucial role in terms of political decision-making and action.
