CINEMA IS… TIME

PRESENTING… The Time That Remains by Elia Suleiman (2009).

We are thrilled to share the second film in our WHAT IS CINEMA? series, curated by Kino Cairo and hosted by Cinema Mounira at the French Institute in Egypt.

Inspired by the private diaries and letters of his parents, Suleiman’s third feature film chronicles the life of a Palestinian family who stayed behind following the 1948 war and ensuring declaration of the state of Israel – thus becoming a minority in their homeland.

With his characteristic blend of comedy and drama, and through the example of one family, Suleiman depicts the effect of this deeply entrenched conflict on the individual and wider collective, from one generation to the next.
