MAMI WATTA, by Christian Thiam, 2021, Senegal
Feature film
Délia wakes up at dawn. She walks along the waterfront as usual. She sits on a rock, opens her notebook and draws recipes for her restaurant. Back home, she checks on her husband Jules who just woke up from sleep. Despite Jules’ insistence on paying their electricity bills, Délia tells him about her bad feeling, and makes him promise her not to go fishing. In the evening, while he was with his best friend Diégane, he breaks his promise and goes to the sea. He will never come back. The circumstances of his death, as well as Délia’s prediction, will encourage the young fishermen of the neighborhood to pay greater attention to Délia’s predictions, which will not make the Imam and the local priest very happy.
