Debate on “Victoria” by Karoline Kamel, a critically awarded first novel. The novel depicts the coming-of-age of Victoria, a young Coptic woman from the provinces who moves to Cairo to complete her studies. Though intimate, this story is rich in social content. It finely describes the complex forms of oppression that dominate Egyptian society on the eve of the 2011 revolution.
