From the outset, modern Arab theatre has been associated with Moli\u00e8re and a discourse advocating modernity and reform. It was not a dramatic model developed coherently and then faithfully reproduced, but rather a vast field of experimentation based on composite, hybrid, local and foreign elements. The plays adapted from Moli\u00e8re’s theatre studied by Ons Trabelsi provide an insight into the process of constructing this model based on a synthesis between, on the one hand, procedures borrowed from Moli\u00e8re and classical comedy and, on the other, procedures inherited from traditional forms of performance.
