SUMMARY:DEBATE - Women’s engagement around the climate emergency: From the first to be impacted to their crucial role in the political decision
DESCRIPTION:A few weeks before COP27 and in response to the UN Women’s 2022 theme: “Equality today for a sustainable future”\, the French Development Agency and the French Institute are joining forces to organise a discussion on how to take gender into account in the climate actions in general and in the COP negotiations. \nGlobally\, climate change and its consequences impact differently men and women: Women are more likely to be vulnerable because they work in sectors that are more affected by climate change\, faces more inequalities in resources and labour market and division. According to UN\, studies found that women are 14 times more likely to die in a climate catastrophe than men. \nDespite recent progress\, gaps remain in how to ensure systemic and effective gender mainstreaming in climate policy. For example\, what are the most effective gender sensitive interventions that can contribute to achieve the Paris Agreement targets? In addition\, what are the policy priorities in terms of gender and climate actions and how COP can deal with it? To sum it up\, what is the real consideration of gender by and within the COP? \nThe purpose of the discussion is then to balance women’s vulnerabilities to climate change with their crucial role in terms of political decision-making and action.

SUMMARY:Recital with Duo Delta - Etienne Champollion (Piano) and Mina Ghobrial (Flute)
DESCRIPTION:Descendant of the Egyptologist’s family\, the composer and pianist Étienne Champollion meets the Egyptian flutist Mina Ghobrial. They form the Duo Delta for a Franco-Egyptian recital in tribute to the decipherer of hieroglyphs. The duo will thus offer a savant and popular repertoire where Rameau\, Berlioz\, Debussy\, Poulenc and Messiaen meet their Egyptian contemporary counterparts such as Rageh Daoud\, Khaled Shokry\, Ahmad El Hennawi and Gamal Abdel-Rahim. This concert is also an opportunity to discover the music of ancient Egypt through several Coptic songs transcribed and adapted by Etienne Champollion. This recital is a vibrant tribute to the intellectual and fraternal ties that have united France and Egypt for over two centuries. “I am everything to Egypt\, she is everything to me\,” wrote Jean-Francois Champollion on September 22nd\, 1822. Nearly two hundred years later\, the Duo Delta delves back musically into this love between two countries\, in this historical\, brilliant\, and ultimately\, universal exchange. \nFree entry

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE - From peoples’ right to self-determination to the status of minorities: The political consequences of the Versailles peace
DESCRIPTION:Conference by Henry Laurens\, professor at the College of France. \nThe term ‘minorities’ is absent from the political language of 19th century Europe. It only appeared late in the administrative practice of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and especially on the eve of the 1914 war in the context of the Balkan wars. Its use became widespread from 1917 onwards in the context of the definition of the right of peoples to self-determination. From then on\, it was used in the 1919 treaties governing European issues. In the same year\, it was used for the Arab East\, thereby transforming the status of communities that had existed for centuries. Henry Laurens holds the Chair of Contemporary History of the Arab World at the College of France. He authored over twenty reference books\, including L’expédition d’Égypte (1798-1801) Paris\, ed. Armand Colin\, 1989 (reissue by Le Seuil in 1997)\, La Question de Palestine\, ed. Fayard\, 1999-2015\, 5 volumes\, Histoire du monde arabe contemporain\, Paris\, ed. Fayard/College of France\, 2004\, Les crises d’Orient\, ed. Fayard\, 2017-2019\, 2 tomes.

SUMMARY:Scientific workshop with Taïna Cluzeau
DESCRIPTION:The lava lamp \nWhat can you build with vinegar\, baking soda and oil? A lava lamp! Through a series of amazing experiments\, the children will understand several principles of chemistry (density\, hydrophobic liquid\, chemical reactions…) and then\, thanks to their new knowledge\, make from scratch a lava lamp. \nBecause of the handling of liquids\, it is recommended to dress children with clothes that can be stained. \n  \nTaïna Cluzeau is a journalist. Through her association Faire ta science! she wants to raise public awareness on scientific research\, especially in countries rarely publicised for their discoveries. She coordinates exhibitions and workshops on various scientific themes in Africa in order to change the public’s view on the work of researchers and collaborates with several French popular science magazines (I’m interested\, National géographic\, Science et Vie junior\, Le journal du CNRS…). \n  \nPrice: Free for media library subscribers \nRegistration : mediatheque.helio@ifegypte.com
