Support to civil society

The institutional cooperation, civil society and heritage sector maintains regular ties not only with French NGOs working in Egypt, but also Egyptian NGOs acting on various topics (equality, women’s rights, the environment, professional training, youth employability…).

This sector supports civil society by awarding grants to Egyptian associations and NGOs that enable them to implement innovative projects on themes such as the youth, social innovation, and current issues like COVID-19 or COP27. It also contributes to the organization of study visits in France for young project leaders doing social, environmental and cultural impact work, allowing them to discover French institutions.

This sector pays particular attention to the issue of gender by integrating it throughout all its actions (event organizing on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day, the representation of women in the IFE’s grant selection panels, encouraging female candidatures…).

International Women’s Rights Day

Every year on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day, this sector coordinates the activities of the French services in Egypt to celebrate March 8th around a different theme from one year to the next. In 2022, the theme chosen was “Feminism and Ecology.” In 2021, the theme was “Women and Health.”

To celebrate this day, a party is organized at the IFE under the chairmanship of the French Ambassador in Egypt and in the presence of a female actor, godmother of the evening. After a round table leading to a lively discussion between thematic experts, one Egyptian association or NGO is awarded the Prix de l’Egalité of the French Embassy and the French Institute in Egypt. This annual award in the amount of 5 000€ enables the association to implement an innovative project advancing women’s rights and empowerment.
